The Story of the German Plate Guy: From Berlin’s DMV to America’s #1 Source for Custom German License Plates
Mastering the Craft: Berlin DMV (1996–2013)
In 1996, Chris began working at the Berlin DMV (Zulassungsstelle), where he produced the actual German license plates used on real vehicles across the city. For nearly two decades, he operated authentic embossing machinery, applied reflective sheeting, used German hot-stamp ink, and perfected the precise layout standards and official DIN fonts that give German plates their iconic look.
These were not hobby plates or replicas —
they were the real plates that went onto real German cars.
This experience laid the foundation for everything that would follow: true expertise, real-world manufacturing skills, and an unmatched understanding of how European plates are supposed to be made.
Early Expansion: eBay & Website Launch (2002)
In 2002, Chris brought his knowledge to the online world. He started selling custom German plates on eBay Germany, which quickly gained traction with car enthusiasts, collectors, and show car owners.
Shortly after, he launched one of the internet’s first niche websites dedicated to custom European license plates, offering styles, decals, and embossed plates that were hard to find anywhere else.
This was the first version of what would eventually evolve into GermanPlateGuy.com.
Falling in Love with the U.S. License Plate Market
Between 2002 and 2013, Chris visited the United States numerous times for car shows, automotive events, German club gatherings and researching the American enthusiast scene.
He quickly realized something big:
American car enthusiasts loved European automotive culture but had almost no access to real, authentic German plates.
Most sellers offered cheap plastic replicas or plates made with incorrect fonts. The U.S. market needed true craftsmanship — and Chris knew he could deliver it.
U.S. Business Visa & Relocation (2013)
After more than a decade of trips, planning, and business development, Chris officially applied for a U.S. business visa — and was approved.
In 2013, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, bringing:
- Authentic German aluminum blanks
- A 50-ton hydraulic embossing press
- Real EU reflective sheeting
- Hot-stamp German ink
- Decades of professional experience
Production officially relocated to the USA. This was the birth of the American brand known today as German Plate Guy.
